Anyone know anything about Mossberg Rifles?

I only ask because the local Sporting goods store (BIG 5) has a mossberg rifle/scope combo on sale for $369.00. The only caliber available is 30-06, which right there would probably keep me from buying it. But, it has a marine coat finish on the rifle and scope. The model is 100 ATR. Just wondering if anyone has experience with the quality/accuracy of this rifle. Thanks.

I almost went with the Savage, but in the end I got the Tikka T3, also. What's wrong with .30-06? Ammo is plentiful. I'd say .308 might be a shade better because it reduces recoil by 1/3 with only a minor reduction in energy at 200 yards. However, .308 ammo is getting harder to find for a reasonable price.

Unfortunately, with scope is the only way it comes. I haven't looked at the rifle in person, but from the picture, it looks extremely similar to a Savage. Maybe it is a Savage, just with Mossberg name on it, I don't know. Just like Sears used to sell the "Ted Williams" rifles. I believe they were made by Marlin.

They have some on gunbroker without the scope. I am in the market for a decently priced 30.06 also.

I don't know about their rifles, but Mossberg makes a good quality, affordable shotgun.

Looks like the price at the sporting goods store is a good one. Gunbroker has the same rifle in blue, without scope for about the same price. I really like the marine coating. Every firearm I've bought in the last 10 years has been stainless, with the exception of my 870. I would prefer a .308 caliber, but I may just pick one of these up. I'm going to go look at them in person.

Just did a quick google tour on it, looks to be an outstanding value. I didn't read a single negative comment. It's not a rebranded Savage, I couldn't find a close up of the action but it looks closer to a Remington pattern. Good luck, let us know how it shoots.

They want $472.00 for that rifle on the website. So, it's on sale for a hundred bucks off retail at Big 5. Thats cool. Thanks for the link.

I'm sorry I didn't renew my FFL years ago. It used to be only 40 bucks or something, now much higher.

Oh there's plenty of them around here. I just wish I would have kept mine current. I went about 10 years without buying any guns, so it wasn't a priority. I've found that when Big 5 has a sale on a particular gun, it's almost always cheaper than the local gun dealers will quote me. They are buying a trainload at a time, so they are getting a better deal. They would have those 525 round bricks of .22lr for 9.99, and the local shop wanted 15 bucks. I'll buy them at 9.99 and resell for 15 all day long!

Yeah, I've talked to the manager at the gun counter there on several occasions. He will give me the sale price on anything, at anytime. But before when I've asked him for one of their advertised rifles in a different caliber, he said he couldn't do it. Like I said, being a large sporting goods chain, they buy a trainload at a time, apparently all in one caliber only!

I don't believe the accurracy is as good as a savage but....

If you get it without a scope....get a Konus pro. Search it on the net. The scopes are the best kept secret out there. They are between 69.00 and 175.00. They have an etched reticle. This is the same technology that was on expensive scopes just a few years ago. Crosshairs are etched into the glass. I've got a 6 x 24...it is very reliable. Super thin crosshairs for long shots. Adjusts to point first time. The glass is average...I have seen better light gathering and clarity on more expensive scopes but it works fine for me. You can use them on 50 cal's without fear of losing the crosshairs. They love recoil.
